Patches for Tomb Raider 1
several patches to improve an already good game
TR-1 on Windows XP
This game was created a long time ago, so it is no surprise that running it on Windows XP is quite difficult to solve. That is why an emulator was created, through which it is possible to run and play the game. You can even enjoy it in high screen resolution (up to 1600x1200) with hardware acceleration. And that is still not all. With special textures that can be loaded into this emulator, you get truly beautiful locations, so even those who played this game long ago will surely want to play it again.
So what is needed? As I already mentioned, of course the Glidos emulator, the Tomb Raider installer and VDM Sound. You will find all of this in the package:
Tomb Raider 1 XP (4,08MB)
In this package, besides the already mentioned files, you will also find a complete manual (in PDF format) for getting everything running. Because the Glidos emulator is not freeware, this package contains a version that does not display the rotating GLIDOS logo across the whole screen. Unfortunately this version is not very stable, so I recommend using version 1.33 instead of version 1.28.
Glidos v1.33 (1,01MB)
Unfortunately, the unpleasant GLIDOS logo is not blocked in this version, but this version is needed to run higher-resolution textures. During testing, I also did not experience the game freezing. If you want to get rid of the logo, you will have to buy a license for this product, which costs 10 dollars. I do not think that is so terrible, considering that this program supports many more games than just TR-1 and TR-1 Gold. The license can be purchased directly on the homepage
here.
For those who still think the price of Glidos is too high, there is also a patch that can block the logo.
Glidos No Logo (10KB)
Place this patch into the Glidos directory and then start Glidos through this patch.
TR-1 with high-resolution textures
This brings us to the already mentioned high-resolution textures. You need to download them and then unpack them into the directory C:\Program Files\Glidos\Textures. Of course, do this only after you have installed Glidos and everything else (see Tomb Raider 1 XP). It is up to you which version of Glidos you install: either the one without the logo, which unfortunately freezes and also does not display these new textures completely correctly, or the newest one with the logo. Instructions for getting the textures running are included in each texture package, but in English. Therefore I will briefly describe it here. There is nothing difficult about it and anyone can manage it. So the textures are below:
Title (Xtra-BETA) (0.64MB)
The Caves (Xtra-BETA) (4,47MB)
City of Vilcabamba (Alternate-BETA) (6,68MB)
Lost Valley (Alternate-BETA) (7,57MB)
If you are interested in more textures, visit the
Tomb Raider Xtra website. There you will learn more about these textures and also how to create your own.
Now for the installation itself. I assume you have the textures loaded in C:\Program Files\Glidos\Textures, or wherever you have Glidos installed. For simplicity, I recommend keeping the paths as they are preset. Then find the Glidos.ini file, located in the C:\Program Files\Glidos folder. Open it and check that it contains the following lines:
Name: Tomb Raider
Executable: C:\Tombraid\Tomb.exe
ExeSizes: 873739
CDCheckFile: data\Level10c.phd
MipMapping: Yes
DosGraphics: Yes
VESASupport: Yes
ControlJudderFix: 1
Resolution: 1
FullScreen: Yes
GammaAdjustment: 0.87
ForcedTextureSmoothing: Yes
TrShadowHack: Yes
TextureOverride: Yes
Mp3BackgroundSounds: Yes
RedbookEmulation: Yes
For correct operation with textures, the line TextureOverride: Yes must be present. The other lines are not very important. The number of lines may differ depending on which version of Glidos you have. The minimum working version is 1.28. This listing is from version 1.33. With this version you may not even need to edit the ini file, because it can be enabled through the user interface, but I include it here for older versions. If you have added the bold line, close and save the ini file.
In the image on the left you can see what needs to be set in version 1.33. The procedure is indicated by numbers.
Everything is now set up and we can launch the game with the Start Game button. Depending on the Glidos version, the menu should already appear with the new textures. If not, set the display to NORMAL in the Video settings (the glasses in the game menu). In the game, textures can then be switched between new and old with the F4 key. The difference is quite noticeable. If stripes happen to appear over the textures, it is caused by an old version of Glidos.
So I hope you managed to get it running. For those who are still unsure, there are several examples
here
showing how it looks with Glidos alone or with the new textures.
TR-1 and graphics patches for older Windows
For those who would like to play this legendary, and I dare say best, game in a slightly better resolution than the original allows, here are several patches for various graphics cards. I should point out right away that these are only graphics patches. This means they probably will not run on WinXP or Win2000. Also, for them to work, you naturally need to have the corresponding graphics card in your PC. Even that does not guarantee that it will work. Do not be afraid to experiment a little, and if one patch does not work, try another. Unfortunately I could not test most of them because I really do not have that many types of graphics cards. However, I tested a VooDoo 3 200 card and it worked perfectly.
Here are just a few requirements for correct function:
1. Own the original game (most patches work only with the CD)
2. Operating system Win95, Win98, 98SE and possibly WinME
3. A sound card with interrupt (IRQ) 5 or 7; DMA - 1; IO - 220 (ideally an older Sound Blaster 16, 32, 64, 128, or even older 1024 or Live 5.1 models)
4. A correctly installed graphics card is also required. Choose the patch according to your graphics card.
5. And finally, strong nerves and plenty of time. It is really worth it and the result is very noticeable.
So here are the promised patches:
TR-1 ATI. (0,28MB)
TR-1 Matrox. (1,14MB)
TR-1 PowerVR. (1,95MB)
TR-1 Rendition. (0,28MB)
TR-1 S3. (0,28MB)
TR-1 Voodoo. (2,37MB)
TR-1 Unknown. (0,72MB)
If you find that a patch works, or on the contrary does not work, you can write to me and I will add your experience. That will make it easier for other players.
If you happen to find any other patches somewhere that are missing here, please send them to me and I will add them too.
